LAURA EINSTEIN, Chair of trustees
Laura is a lawyer from the United States. She has devoted her career to issues related to social justice and civil rights. She has represented women seeking equity in the workplace; defended the rights of people living with HIV to have access to employment, public accommodation and public services; and worked on behalf of people with disabilities to ensure they can be full and equal participants in their communities. Before moving to the UK in 2017, she served as Chief Legal Counsel at Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest and the Hawaiian Islands, a charity that provides reproductive health care and advocates for full access to reproductive health services for women and men. She currently serves as Special Counsel to Planned Parenthood.

Amir Ahmed attended the University of California, Berkeley where he received a degree in Economics with Honors. After starting his career in investment banking for Credit Suisse First Boston in the US, he moved to Castle Creek-a global multi-strategy Hedge Fund-in 2008. He currently oversees the firm’s London office and manages the firm’s European and Asian investments. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst.
HR DIRECTOR & CARAS SECRETARY
Helen Gribble is a Board Level HR Director with experience in the Construction, Financial Services and Retail industries in both the UK and New Zealand. Her experience has included managing large scale projects and teams. Helen has undertaken advocacy work for South London Refugee Association, travelled to the Calais and Dunkirk camps and is also the Chair of Wandsworth Welcomes Refugees. Currently her focus is assisting refugees into employment in the UK.
Sue Stevens was appointed to our Board as a Trustee in 2016. Sue is an HR professional who has spent most of her career working for major banks. Most recently Sue was a Chief of Staff, based in Dubai. After returning to the UK, Sue has taken a career break to explore volunteering opportunities.
PAEDIATRICIAN AND SAFEGUARDING SPECIALIST
Jessica Thomas studied Natural Sciences at Cambridge before moving across to medicine in 2002. Based at St George’s, University of London, she was one of the original group of medical students who began running activities for children of refugee background in 2003, eventually leading to the creation of CARAS. Jessica is a paediatrician and safeguarding specialist who also sits on the management committee of street-child NGO, the Moroccan Children’s Trust.
SOCIAL WORKER AND UNIVERSITY LECTURER
Rick Hood is a social worker with a background in child protection and public care. He currently works as a Senior Lecturer in Social Work at Kingston University, and carries out research on partnership work and safeguarding issues. Before becoming a social worker, Rick was employed in the voluntary sector and ran a youth and community project in Camberwell, South London.
Head of Development at Toynbee Hall
Rosie Spiegelhalter is currently Head of Development for Toynbee Hall, responsible for the funding of frontline services combating poverty including management of statutory and grant partnerships and corporate and major donor relations. Previously she worked on the fundraising campaign in the wake of the fire at Battersea Arts Centre.
